The Role of Social Media in Recruitment

Social media has completely transformed the recruitment process by allowing employers to interact with potential employees in a much easier and efficient manner. With billions of users on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, the need for social media as tools for talent search and branding has steadily increased.

One of the most profound contributions of social media to recruitment is the increase in the number of possible candidates. The traditional methods of recruiting using job boards or career fairs is both time and geographical space bound. Social media eliminates these limitations allowing employers to tap into a global market in an instant. Recruiters can use social media platforms like LinkedIn to virtually ‘filter’ their candidates, thereby increasing the chance of coming across someone with the right skills. (Marler, J. H., & Fisher, S. L. 2013).

Also, social media improves employer branding which is another important aspect of hiring. Job seekers get an insight of the working conditions of the company, its culture, values, and environment through the culture of the company’s social media presence. This coupled with employee testimonials and other achievements, helps in boosting the cultural fit of potential employees. The recruits most likely to be oriented towards a certain culture will appreciate and apply for offered positions when the employer brand is positive. (Wright, P., & Snell, S. A. 2005).

In addition, social media enables recruiters and candidates to communicate directly rather than depending on resumes alone, recruiters can interact with candidates via comments, messages, and even video interviews. This interaction allows recruiters to evaluate soft skills and cultural fit alongside, and sometimes in place of technical competence.

As seen, social media has automated processes in recruitment and is a useful tool for improving efficiency. It increases the diversity of participants in the employment process while providing great value for both employers and potential employees.
